Where are you located? Do you travel?
Oberon Lane is based in both Sydney, NSW, and Hobart, Tasmania. My business partner and I started the company about six years ago in NSW, and we decided to expand it to Tasmania when I moved back to Hobart in 2020 with my young family. Yes, we do travel all over for weddings; however, some areas incur an additional travel fee.
Tell us about your background and what led you to your current industry.
I come from a family of avid music lovers, so music has always been a big part of my life. I played in numerous bands growing up, and I continued to make music when I moved to Sydney for uni. I worked as a full-time independent musician for 10 years, and my business partner and I spent several of those years playing, writing and recording music as a country/pop duo before starting Oberon Lane. Creating a wedding music company was a fairly natural progression for me; I've always been business-savvy, and music has been a lifelong passion.
What services do you provide?
We provide a variety of packages to cover all your musical needs on your wedding day, our most popular of which is our acoustic + DJ wedding package. It's basically an acoustic soloist/duo/trio + DJ for the full day of your wedding. We learn your three ceremony songs to play live (down the aisle + signing of the register + celebration), then we play acoustic music for your canapes and early reception before switching to DJ mode to get the dance floor pumping.
What’s your special talent?
Honestly, I'm very good at rhyming off the top of my head – a talent I use frequently at home to annoy my wife.
How can I find out more about you before I book?
You can check out our website at www.oberonlane.com. If you're interested, you can contact us via the website and we'll get back to you with package information and quotes.
What sets you apart from everyone else?
Our flexibility, our years of experience, our exceptional audio production, and our comprehensive packages which have been tweaked and perfected over many years and thousands of weddings. We now book 500+ weddings a year, and we have nothing but happy brides and 5-star reviews, so we must be doing something right :)
Why weddings? What do you love most about being a part of a couples special day?
Because weddings are the best! There's so much joy and love in the air, and it honestly never gets old for me. Knowing that I'm providing the soundtrack to such a special day in someone's life – I'm creating a feeling that will be thought about and remembered forever – that's what I love most about it.
Getting married in Tasmania is a unique experience, what do you love the most about weddings on the island? There's just something really special about Tassie – and I'm not just saying that because I was born and bred here! The air is clean, the food and wine is amazing, the scenery is next level, and everyone is happy. I've played hundreds of weddings, and while they are always special, Tassie weddings all seem to have a little extra magic about them. I can't really explain it, but I definitely feel it. Without identifying the bride and groom, tell us about your favourite, funniest or strangest wedding story? At a beautiful wedding a couple of years ago, the celebrant called the page boy up and asked him to hand over the rings. The young boy walked over and started shaking his head and shrugging his shoulders. Everyone laughed, assuming it was a joke that perhaps one of the groomsmen had put him up to, but it soon became apparent that he did not in fact have the rings! After a minute or two of awkward laughter, the maid of honour took off her heels and raced down the aisle, jumped in a car and drove off. She returned 10 minutes later, looking puffed but still very elegant, and handed over the rings. Everyone applauded and she did a little bow. She certainly proved herself as a worthy MOH!
